Digital technologies like the cloud, the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, e-commerce and social media platforms are requiring more processing and storage infrastructure which consume increasing amounts of energy. Given that most of this energy is lost into the atmosphere as heat, it is well worth considering if it can be recovered or reused. In fact, some centers have already managed to do this and new projects and technical solutions are currently being developed.
The numbers speak for themselves: in 2016, 3% of the world’s electricity was consumed by datacenters and it is estimated that this will rise to 13% by 2030. Ever more datacenters are being built all over the world to process, store and exchange ever more data. French IT market researcher IDC estimated that there would be over 8 million datacenters by 2017, hosting over 45 million servers.
